Introduction to Natural Dyeing

In this workshop, your guide, Anne Foy, will show you what delicate colours can be obtained from nature's gifts around us - kitchen waste, garden clippings, bush foraging, the local barrista's clean-up - the options are endless! Together, you will also look at strong traditional dye extracts.

The emphasis on this workshop will be on dyeing small pieces of wool and silk fabrics and threads to stitch a slow 'local' cloth. Of course, you can dye larger pieces or garments at home afterwards.

While the dyepots simmer, the group will start to stitch a small project and discuss historical and contemporary natural dyeing.

Why Natural Dyeing?

YES it takes longer than chemical dyeing

YES colours do fade (some more than others) With care you can enjoy these 'living' colours for a long time. Using natural dyes makes us aware of seasonal changes. We avoid handling chemicals which have an effect on both the user, the wearer and our earth.

What is Included?

The vast dyeing knowledge passed on to you by an experienced and well-travelled guide.

Previosuly dyed wool fabric for the base of your needlecase project.

Already prepared dyepots so that  the time spent waiting for dye process to complete is minimised.

Pre-mordanted fabric and yarns to dye yourself in colours of your chossing. (A mordant, or dye fixative, is a substance used to set or bind dyes on fabrics).

Silk and wool yarns and assorted fabrics for embellishment of your project.

You will leave with your needlecase project to complete at home, wet fragments from your dyepots, and (hopefully) inspiration to continue natural dyeing at home.

An overall relaxing, learning experience with other nature-lovers.

And, of course, socialising over Wine and Cheese!

Introducing your Guide into the world of Natural Dyeing:

Hi, my name is Anne Foy and I have explored various textile techniques over the years (some of them quite toxic). I have been drawn to the importance of chemical-free dyeing which has led me to travel widely to learn from people who have dedicated years to researching traditional dyeing. This includes in:

  • 2014 - Claudy Jongsta in Holland
  • 2015 - Aboubakar Fofana (from Mali / Paris) in Sydney
  • 2016 - the World Shibori Symposium in Oaxaca, Mexico
  • 2017 - Irit Dulman (from Israel) in Spain

I work from my home studio using natural dyes with shibori, felting, eco-painting and spinning raw fibres.
