Slow Stitch Workshop

Join us for the ever-increasingly popular Slow Stitch concept where you can take time for yourself to relax and unwind with this therapeutic and mindful workshop. The practice of mindfulness, where one focuses one's full attention only on the present, experiencing thoughts, feelings, and sensations but not judging them, can reduce stress and physical pain.

This workshop will draw inspiration from the Japanese stitching methods of Boro and Sashiko as you take a mixture of repurposed, recycled, inherited, and vintage textiles to create the background for your artwork.

Sashiko (刺し子, literally meaning "little stabs") is a form of decorative and reinforcement stitching. Traditionally, this running stitch is used to reinforce points of wear or to repair worn places or tears with patches.

Boro is the art of mending rags or scraps of cloth. The term "boro" is also used to describe clothes and household items which have been patched-up and repaired many times.

A simple stitched silhouette, like a flower or foliage, can then be added as a finishing embellishment!

This is a slow, whimsical process, which results in a layered textile artwork which is unique to each maker.

Introducing your Guide into the concept of Slow Stitching:

My name is Lisa Mattock and the combination of my background in floristry and my lifelong love of textiles (especially reclaimed ones!) merge together as we create "layers and stitches".

Using textiles to create artworks was a concept that I first explored during my senior high school years, creating a flowing, floor length coat made from strips of fabric knitted and woven together. It was brilliantly colourful and embellished with embroidered flowers made from beads and sequins.

After many years living overseas, I returned home to Australia and my partner and I established a florist and homewares store in Sydney's eastern suburbs. This was the ideal backdrop for me to indulge my passion for colour and design using beautiful flowers and foliages, creating event and wedding concepts, along with visual merchandising and buying for our store.

Since 2013, I have once again turned my creative attention to combining textiles and creating artworks. I now have multiple retailers and galleries which sell my pieces which includes framed artworks and a range of embellished linen bags.

I use the name “Forage”, as that describes my process of seeking out textiles which are reclaimed, recycled and vintage. Some of the fabrics and embellishments which I source are from discontinued textile sample books, which would otherwise be added to landfill. Others come from thrift shops and garage sales. The silk embellishments that I use are from women's cooperatives in India.
